Etiquette of the Virgins
The Virgin Islands are like beach towns, but not the usual kind. People here dress modestly and expect visitors to do the same in public places. Following these customs may help you get better service..
When you enter a store or encounter someone - say Good Morning, Good Afternoon, Good Evening ( really a ‘Hello’ and not a goodbye) or Good Day. Skipping one of these upon greeting can offend the person you are speaking with. It goes a long way to work those in to your daily interactions with the locals.
Please wear appropriate clothing when leaving the beach. You need to have a shirt, shorts, or dress on when entering a store or walking in public. Wearing only a swimsuit may result in being refused service, fined $100, or jailed for up to 90 days. The establishment can also be fined for serving you.
While driving in the islands, remember it's different than just driving on the left. People here take their time and drive slowly, sometimes stopping to chat with friends on the road. Please be patient, don't honk or shout, just go around them safely. Drive carefully and take corners slow, as locals often drive in the middle of the road.
Relax, and adapt to Island time. Be patient as things move slower here. Enjoy paradise and be prepared for longer waits. Plan ahead and ask early for anything you need. Time moves differently here…you may enjoy the slower pace if you embrace it.
We hope you enjoy your stay on our island home, and find these tips helpful.
